An Unexpected Ending

When I set out to write my first novel, I made a promise to myself that I would have the ending clearly defined before getting started. I didn’t want to become one of those aspiring writers who devotes years of his life to a writing project that he never completes.

But the farther along I got in writing the rough draft, the more cliché my climax of a father-son conflict seemed. Haven’t we all either watched a movie or read a book where the rebellious teenager goes head-to-head with his old man? And this type of conflict/resolution didn’t feel true to the characters who had taken on a good deal of depth since I first laid out the storyline.

I don’t want to reveal too much, other than the fact that it is quite humbling when the story surprises even the writer.
